Poetry Month
Emma Weiland
April is a month that we will always know as poetry month. Poetry is important to the world because it's a beautiful way to express how we feel and think. Students in schools around the world celebrate poetry
by writing and reading poems. A few of our favorite poets were even BORN in April! One of the more famous and well known poets was William Shakespeare. Sadly, he died on April 23, 1616. William Shakespeare had his own form of poetry, called Sonnets. His particular style was along the rules of Iambic Pentameter. Iambic pentameter is an extremely unique style of poetry, so make sure to ask your English teacher to tell you about it! As poetry month comes to a close, we can celebrate one of our own poets here at Muller! Her name is Erin Steward. Erin wrote a unique poem about her own favorite bedtime icon, the sheep! Erin was asked why poetry was important, and she she told us that it was important because it impacts the students in its own way, and it's a creative way to share their thoughts and feelings without judgement or even a second thought. Erin is so correct too! Poetry has been a way for thousands of years for men and women to express themselves. Edgar Allen Poe is known for his deep, dark, yet meaningful poems. William Shakespeare is known for his love stories and his beautiful tragedies. Erin could be known for her soft tales and kind stories, you never know! Check out Erin's poem below! I feel as though I'm counting sheep, Trying to do so in my sleep, Jumping jumping over my head, Tossing and turning in my bed, How on earth can I fall asleep, With all these knuckle head sheep, Jumping over the moon, Whistling to their annoying tune. One, two, three, four, Here they come through my door, Five, six, seven, eight, Here they come on roller skates, Nine, ten, eleven, twelve, Playing on top of my shelves, Now my eyes are getting heavy, There they go off to bed-dy. |
