The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. The AAU was founded on January 21st in 1888. Its goal was to create common standards in amateur sports. Since then, most national championships in the United States have taken place under AAU leadership. The AAU has represented U.S. sports with various international sports federations. It has grown over the years to become one of the leading and most influential associations. The AAU worked with the United States Olympic Committee to prepare U.S. athletes for the Olympic Games. As part of this, the AAU Junior Olympic Games were introduced in 1949. People ages 8 years or older in certain sports can take part in these games. I asked a few AAU basketball players about their experience. Seventh grader, Darrington Israel said "The reason I like playing AAU sports is because it can really get you exposed by college coaches and,it is fun to play". Seventh grader, Howard Frazier said "I like the traveling and meeting new friends."Many future world and Olympic champions have appeared in these events, which are still held every year. AAU sports include basketball, softball, beach volleyball, cheerleading, football, soccer, lacrosse, and more. There are 55 different districts of AAU. Some are divided into regions, and some are divided into states. AAU sports are a great opportunity to make new friends and to help you get to the next level with a sport you love!
