MLK Day
David Burns and Robert Quattlebaum
January 18, we were off school because of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, but do you understand who he was? Around this time people were treated differently. This was called segregation. African Americans were the victims of the cruel segregation. There would be areas labeled white or colored, and the white section was always better. Even though African Americans were treated unfairly, a man named Martin Luther King Jr. changed everything.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15 1929. Martin Luther King Jr was an activist who stood for African American’s rights. He lead the Civil Rights Movement. He gave many speeches to speak out against the injustice of segregation. He spoke for African Americans to have voting rights, along with many other rights, and helped lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He also gave a legendary speech called the “I Have A Dream” speech. Sadly, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He may have died, but the visions he had were eternal. This is what Dwayne stated when we interviewed him, “He was a man who fought against segregation, and won the rights movement for African Americans.”
