A 41 year old, female, Northern White Rhino named Nora died on November 15. She had an operation on November 13, but due to drastic deterioration in her health she had to be put down. She lived in the San Diego Zoo, and after her death there are now only 3 Northern White Rhinos left in the world. The San Diego Zoo said, “Nora was an iconic animal, not only at the San Diego Safari Park, but around the world.” In a message posted on its Facebook page, San Diego Zoo described Nola’s death as “a very difficult loss.”
The last three Northern White Rhinos are at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, where they live under 24-hour armed guard. The names on them are Najin, Fatu, and Sudan. Sudan is the only male White Rhino left on the planet. The subspecies has been decimated by poachers. They are killed for their horns, which are highly prized in some parts of Asia, where it is claimed they have medicinal properties, according to AP.
